Our Story, Our Purpose

Since 2010, MABEL Environmental Foundation with index number BC/ITN/25/128 has been at the forefront of environmental stewardship in Ghana, driven by community, guided by science, and inspired by our land.

Our History

Born from a Community's Need

MABEL Environmental Foundation was established in 2010 by a group of environmental scientists, community leaders, and concerned citizens who witnessed the growing waste crisis in Ghana's urban and peri-urban communities firsthand.

What began as a small weekend clean-up group in East Legon, Accra, has grown into a nationally recognised non-governmental organisation with a presence in seven regions across Ghana, a network of over 12,000 trained volunteers, and dozens of active environmental programmes.

Named after Mabel Teye, a pioneering Ghanaian environmental activist whose grassroots work in the 1990s laid the foundation for community-based waste management in the country, the Foundation continues her legacy with renewed purpose and modern tools.

Why MABEL Exists

The Problem We're Solving

Ghana generates over 12,000 tonnes of solid waste daily. Less than 10% is properly managed. We exist to close that gap.

The Crisis

Over 90% of Ghana's waste ends up in open dumps or water bodies, polluting communities and threatening public health.

Establish community-based recycling hubs in 100 communities by 2027, diverting 200 tonnes of recyclable waste annually.
